Iranian wetland conservation project achieves landmark reductions in water use and boosts agriculture

The initiative will deploy advanced irrigation techniques and water management strategies

Efforts to preserve Iran’s wetlands have achieved remarkable outcomes, including a 27.5 per cent reduction in irrigation water consumption and a 22.5 per cent increase in agricultural output, according to the Iranian Department of Environment (DOE).

This conservation initiative, which covers 49 wetlands across the country, underscores Iran's commitment to sustainable ecosystem management and climate resilience, as reported by Tehran Times, a partner of TV BRICS.

By training over 2,400 farmers in sustainable agricultural techniques, the initiative has reduced chemical fertiliser use by up to 30 per cent and increased farmers’ incomes by 14 per cent. It has also fostered community involvement, with the establishment of 26 NGOs and 181 livelihood support groups across 44 villages.

The initiative will deploy advanced irrigation techniques and water management strategies, creating a blueprint for broader environmental and economic benefits across the region, the source claims.
