Jair Bolsonaro has approved a law banning the euthanasia of dogs and cats
Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro has approved a law banning the euthanasia of dogs and cats by zoonosis control agencies, public kennels, and other similar institutions. Animals caught on the streets are usually sent to these facilities. This is the data by Rede TV!, TV BRICS network’s partner.
The text was approved at the end of September by the National Congress and is authored by federal deputies Ricardo Izar (PP-SP) and Celio Studart (PV-CE).
According to the new law, only animals with serious illnesses or incurable infectious and contagious diseases that pose a threat to the health of humans and other animals may be euthanised. In this case, the procedure must be duly justified by a preceding veterinary opinion.
“The main idea of the project is to protect street animals and encourage their ‘adoption’, as well as to eliminate the unmotivated and unjustified slaughter of animals without incurable infectious diseases,” says a statement from the General Secretary of the Presidency of the Republic.
