Jilin province becomes the hub for Russian crab imports into China

The province hosts the famous 145-meter-long “crab” street

Jilin Province, located in northeast China, has become the primary supplier of seafood to other regions of the country, despite being landlocked. This unique position is attributed to the Hunchun border checkpoint with Russia, according to Northeast Asia Today, a partner of TV BRICS.

Since 2016, Russian seafood imports to China have first arrived in the border city of Hunchun in Jilin before being distributed nationwide, making the province a key hub for importing Russian crab.

The city of Hunchun is also home to a famous 145-meter-long "crab street," lined with numerous seafood shops and restaurants, including those specialising in Kamchatka crab. This area has become a popular tourist attraction and filming location for bloggers, drawing visitors eager to taste delicacies and learn about various crab preparation methods.

Additionally, the city features a royal crab exhibition hall. According to the hall's general manager, Wang Hai, transporting Kamchatka crabs requires precise conditions for temperature and oxygen levels.

"Kamchatka crabs are placed in oxygenation boxes to ensure a sufficient oxygen supply, then covered with ice packs to maintain temperatures below minus 1 degree Celsius," he explained.

The portal notes that a special green customs channel was established at the Hunchun checkpoint to maintain seafood freshness, allowing rapid documentation and clearance processes.
