Kazakhstan expands aquaculture projects to boost fish production

Kazakhstan has implemented 87 projects for fish farming and processing between 2021 and 2024, with total investments reaching US$43.5 million, according to the Ministry of Agriculture, as reported by Kazinform, a partner of TV BRICS. The combined annual capacity of the newly launched facilities exceeds 20,000 tonnes of fish products.

The implementation of these initiatives has contributed to strengthening domestic production and reducing dependence on imported fish products by around 15 per cent. The projects cover both aquaculture development and fish processing, supporting the growth of the sector across several regions of the country.

In 2025, eight additional investment projects were launched with a total capacity of more than 1,200 tonnes of fish per year. One of the most notable developments is the launch of a cage farming facility in the Mangystau Region.

According to the Ministry of Agriculture, a further 40 aquaculture projects worth US$ 109.9 million are currently under development and are expected to be completed by 2030. These initiatives aim to increase fish farming volumes to 14,400 tonnes, expand processing capacity to 10,000 tonnes, and support the production of fish feed at up to 6,800 tonnes per year. Plans are also being considered to build modern fish feed plants in the Almaty, Akmola, and Mangystau regions.
