Kazakhstan introduces veterinary passports for apiaries to strengthen beekeeping sector

Kazakhstan is set to introduce mandatory veterinary passports for apiaries under newly approved legislation designed to modernise the country’s beekeeping sector and strengthen support for sustainable agricultural development, as reported by Kazinform, a TV BRICS partner.

The law establishes a comprehensive regulatory framework for beekeeping, focusing on the protection, management and reproduction of bee populations while improving productivity and industry standards across the country.

According to lawmakers, the reforms were developed to address long-term challenges in the sector, including the need for stronger breeding programmes, enhanced biosecurity measures, and improved coordination of beekeeping activities.

A key provision of the law is the introduction of a veterinary passport for every apiary. The document will serve as an official registration and monitoring tool, helping to streamline veterinary oversight and support preventive animal health measures throughout the sector.

The legislation also modernises the legal terminology used in beekeeping by introducing a range of specialised definitions, including breeding queen bees, drone bees, honey production standards, isolated mating stations and instrumental insemination centres. Officials believe these updates will improve regulatory clarity and align industry practices with contemporary scientific approaches.

In addition, local authorities will receive expanded responsibilities to support research, innovation and development projects related to bee conservation, breeding and sustainable management. The measures are expected to encourage greater collaboration between researchers, beekeepers and public institutions.

Another significant reform is the creation of a unified national chamber representing all bee breeds across Kazakhstan. The new body will help coordinate industry development, facilitate knowledge sharing and support the implementation of nationwide standards.
