Lula da Silva and Wellington Dias to discuss the Global Alliance Against Hunger and Poverty at the AU Summit

Brazil's president came up with the idea for the alliance when the country took over as head of the G20

Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva and Minister of Development and Social Assistance, Family and Hunger Wellington Dias will arrive in Addis Ababa, capital of Ethiopia, to attend the 37th African Union (AU) Summit of Heads of State and Government.

The visit aims to make progress on the Global Alliance Against Hunger and Poverty to gain support for Brazil's main bid for the G20 presidency.

"The G20 countries agreed to discuss the Global Alliance and agreed that when this alliance is launched, it should have a platform that allows other states to participate, not just G20 members," Wellington Dias said.

The entry of the African Union (AU) as a full member of the G20 at the New Delhi summit in September 2023 has opened new opportunities for the Global Alliance Against Hunger and Poverty. The bloc brings together 55 African states with a combined GDP of about three trillion US dollars.

The Brazilian president came up with the idea of creating the alliance when the country took over as head of the G20. The initiative involves presenting the practical experience of other countries to states that want to adapt and implement these policies on their territory.

While in Ethiopia, the Brazilian delegation will also hold bilateral meetings with representatives of some African countries.

Financing and management mechanisms will be discussed during the year and presented to the heads of state and government at the G20 summit scheduled for November in Rio de Janeiro. This is reported by Brasil 247, a partner of TV BRICS.
