More than 220 Million Trees Were Planted in India in One Day
More than one million Indians planted 220 million trees in one day, reports atvbrics.com correspondent with the reference to Associated Press.
The large-scale environmental campaign took place in the most densely populated state of the country Uttar Pradesh. 220 million trees is not a random number – this is the number of people living in the state. College and school students, officials, government employees, and ordinary citizens planted saplings along roads, railway tracks, and in forests. The campaign involved about 60 thousand villages and 83 thousand wood lots.
"The whole process can be traced online. Places of forestation have their own geo tags, and saplings have a QR code. Thus, we can write down how many saplings were planted and where", said Avanish Awasthi, an official representative of the government of the State.
The environmental campaign was held within the government campaign for fight against climate change and environmental conservation. Three years ago, the Indian government expressed the intention to spend the enormous amount of $6.2 billion to increase the area of the woods in the country by a third.
This initiative became the second massive campaign for tree planting. The first one was held in Uttar Pradesh in July 2016. On that day, 50 million trees were planted.
