Omsk Geologists "Came Across" a Mammoth

Specialists of one of the Omsk geological-prospecting companies found mammoth remains. They were found near the village of Rassokhino in the Novovarshavsky District; then it was delivered by the staff of the company to Omsk, reports a tvbrics.com correspondent with the reference to omskzdes.ru.

Vertebras and other parts of an ancient skeleton were found in the course of a routine examination of a mortar sand mining pit. Under assumptions of scientists, the remains are about 20 thousand years old.

"On-site, in the field, we initially estimated that these are the parts of a mammoth skeleton. We, of course, doubted, but a paleontologist from a regional ethnography museum dispelled our doubts. He confirmed that these are really mammoth remains. Geologically, the pit is a stamping ground where mammoths came to drink water", the Deputy CEO of the company Zhanna Dolya said.

After the discovery, they put the pit works on hold. According to the staff of the company, in 2020, an expedition will be sent to the pit, which will survey the place and make further excavation. By the way, except qualified geologists and paleontologists, students of subject-oriented institutions will also take part in excavation.

"We prefer not to speak in more detail about the place where we made the discovery. Such curiosities attract tusk hunters, and we would not like this unique place to be plundered. Earlier on, while performing planned work, we found in the pit walls lots of unique fauna, which is of big interest to geologists. But it is the first time we find a mammoth", Zhanna Dolya explained.

By the way, bones of mammoths have been already found in the Omsk Region. In 2017, while camping on the bank of Irtysh near the village of Ust-Ishim, paleontologists found a well-preserved skull of a mammoth. The trophy is 50-12 thousand years old.
