Omsk launches production of strategic raw materials for aviation and industry

This product has been included in the list of critically important chemical products

Omsk has commenced production of low molecular weight, high-reactivity polyisobutylene (PIB), a product now listed as a critically important chemical output. The facility boasts a design annual capacity of 10,000 tonnes, according to the website of the Ministry of Industry and Trade of the Russian Federation.

Low molecular PIB finds application in the manufacturing of aviation lubricants, adhesives, sealants, and electrical insulation. It also serves as an emulsifier in the production of explosives for geological exploration.

“We have launched the production of low molecular weight, high-reactivity polyisobutylene with an annual capacity of 10,000 tonnes. The realisation of this project will meet domestic market demand and eliminate our country’s reliance on foreign supplies,” stated Artur Smirnov, Director of the Chemical Industry Department at the Ministry of Industry and Trade of the Russian Federation.

Total investment in the production facility exceeded US$32 million. Previously, over 90 per cent of this product available on the Russian market was imported.

The output has been officially included in the list of critically important chemical products, as approved by the Ministry of Industry and Trade of the Russian Federation.
