Russia and Belarus to boost cooperation with the Global South through BRICS and SCO platforms

Speaking in Brest on 22 November during a joint session of the foreign ministries of Russia and Belarus, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation Sergey Lavrov announced that Russia and Belarus are intensifying efforts to develop a unified mechanism for addressing regional and international issues. This is reported by BelTA, a partner of TV BRICS.

Russian Foreign Minister highlighted Belarus’s growing role in international organisations.

"We are working together to build up political, trade and economic interaction with the states of Asia, the Middle East, Africa, and Latin America. Belarus has become a full member of the SCO. This year it became a partner state of BRICS. This is a new category, which actually means the opportunity to participate in all events without exception"

Key discussions during the meeting focused on deepening coordination with SCO and BRICS. Lavrov underscored that such multilateral platforms, as well as the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU) are actively working to establish new independent framework. These initiatives also align with efforts within the Union State and the EAEU.

Lavrov revealed that a joint ministerial statement outlining a vision for the charter has been finalised, with the next steps involving collaboration with partners from SCO, the CIS, and CSTO to draft the document.

Looking ahead, the Supreme State Council of the Union State is set to convene in December. Lavrov highlighted the significance of this meeting, where critical security-related documents are expected to be signed. These agreements will reinforce the shared strategic interests of Russia and Belarus.
