Russian exports of fertilisers to Malaysia increase 2.2 times

Russian exports of fertilisers to Malaysia grew by 124 per cent in the first eight months of 2025 compared with the same period last year. This was reported following the 4th Intergovernmental Commission between the two countries.

The meeting took place on the island of Langkawi (Malaysia). The Russian delegation was headed by Minister of Science and Higher Education of the Russian Federation Valery Falkov, and the Malaysian delegation was led by Minister of Higher Education Zambry Abd Kadir.

It was noted that trade turnover between the two countries is also showing growth: since the beginning of 2025, it has increased by 32 per cent. In addition, Malaysia has opened its market to Russian dairy products and approved certification for the supply of Russian chicken and turkey.

“Our countries are actively cooperating in the international arena. We stand for the establishment of a fair, multipolar world based on the principles of equality and mutual respect [...] We regard Malaysia as a reliable partner of Moscow in the Asia-Pacific region, time-tested, an authoritative member of ASEAN and a representative of the Muslim world,” emphasised the head of the Russian Ministry of Science and Higher Education, as quoted on the official website of the ministry.

Scientific and educational cooperation is also developing in parallel. During the meeting, more than 35 agreements were signed between universities of the two countries, bringing the total number of agreements to over 150. Malaysia already hosts a Russian Language Centre and a Russian Centre for Open Education.

Tourist flow between the two countries is also increasing: since the beginning of the year, the number of trips from Malaysia to Russia has grown by 76 per cent, while Russians made 86.4 thousand trips to Malaysia in the first six months of 2025.

Earlier, Russian Deputy Prime Minister Aleksey Overchuk stated that Malaysia meets the criteria to become a full member of BRICS, according to the BERNAMA, a TV BRICS partner. Brazil is also ready to support Malaysia’s candidacy for joining the group, President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva said at a press conference following his visit to Kuala Lumpur, the partner media outlet Brasil 247 reported.
