Russian Foreign Ministry supports Azerbaijan's aspiration to cooperate with BRICS

The official representative of the Foreign Ministry emphasised that the doors of the association remain open

The Russian leadership welcomes Azerbaijan's aspiration to cooperate with BRICS, which defends the interests of the world majority. This was stated by Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova at a briefing.

According to her, Moscow tried to involve like-minded states, including Azerbaijan, in the group's work as much as possible during Russia's chairmanship of BRICS in 2024.

"Last year, Azerbaijan was included in the expanded list of countries that expressed interest in strengthening cooperation with the association. The BRICS doors remain open. The priority in doing so is to enhance the effectiveness and consolidation of the BRICS' expanded strategic partnership"

The diplomat reminded that the decision on full participation in the group is made on the basis of comprehensive consultations and consensus.

Baku's desire to become a member of BRICS is reflected in the joint declaration on the establishment of strategic cooperation between Azerbaijan and China. The document was adopted in early July 2024 at the summit of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation in Astana. In August of the same year, it was reported that the republic submitted an official application to join the association. In addition, Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev attended the BRICS summit in Kazan, which took place on 22-24 October 2024.
