São Paulo may host the largest carnival in history

According to the mayor’s estimates, 15 million people are to hit the streets

Ricardo Nunes, the Mayor of São Paulo, stated that the city could host a carnival next year, if it maintains the rates associated with COVID-19 declining. Reported by Rede TV!.

“Today, the trend is that the carnival will take place here. Most likely, it will be possible to do this, but only if the vaccination rates continue to grow and mortality rates continue to fall. If everything goes according to plan, we will host the carnival, ” he said.

It is noted that if pandemic indicators will allow, and healthcare authorities will grant their permission, the mayor's office expects that the street carnival in São Paulo will become the largest in history. According to preliminary estimates, 15 million people will take part in it, the mayor said.

“Everything is settled. We intend to issue decrees. Why are we getting everything ready? Because it is impossible to host such an outstanding event without planning. I would say that it’s very probable that we will host it [the carnival]. The only possible obstacle is any unfavourable events by that time,” Nunes emphasized.

In September, the mayor has already given permission to start preparations for the carnival in the city of São Paulo. However, at the time, the mayor's office said that the carnival would only be allowed if at least 70 percent of São Paulo's population were vaccinated against the coronavirus, and with permission from municipal authorities such as the Municipal Health Department. Over the weekend, city officials have stated that more than 80 percent of adults in the capital are fully vaccinated against COVID-19.
