Saudi Arabia launches innovative smart tree initiative to promote green spaces and environmental awareness

The initiative is designed to educate all sectors of the community on the importance of afforestation

Saudi Arabia’s Eastern Region Municipality, in collaboration with Khafji Municipality, has kicked off a project to plant 5,000 smart trees across several key streets in the governorate. This is reported by Saudi Press Agency (SPA).

As part of Saudi Arabia’s broader Saudi Green Initiative, the project aims to expand green spaces, raise public awareness about environmental sustainability, and encourage community engagement in afforestation efforts. The smart trees being planted are specifically adapted to the region's climate and feature cutting-edge technology, including QR codes and GPS tracking, which allow residents to access information about each tree, such as the planting date and other specific details.

These water-efficient smart trees are a key element of Khafji’s commitment to promoting sustainable urban development and environmental conservation. By incorporating innovative technology, the project blends modern solutions with traditional green efforts, ensuring that the initiative not only enhances the aesthetic and environmental landscape but also involves the public in maintaining and preserving these spaces.

In addition to the tree planting initiative, the municipality plans to enhance green areas within public squares, increasing the per capita green space, improving the visual environment, and reducing pollution. The initiative is also designed to educate all sectors of the community on the importance of afforestation and environmental stewardship.
