Saudi Arabia launches licensing initiative to boost digital health sector

This new licensing framework allows to create and implement cutting-edge medical software

Fahd bin Abdurrahman Al-Jalajel, Saudi Arabia's Minister of Health unveiled a pioneering licensing initiative for medical software developers on Tuesday, a strategic move to accelerate digital health advancements in the Kingdom. This is reported by Arab News.

The initiative was introduced at the Global Health Exhibition in Riyadh. Designed to simplify the use of software in diagnostics, treatment, and healthcare decision-making, the programme was launched at an event attended by Saudi Food and Drug Authority (SFDA) CEO Hisham bin Saad Aljadhey and other key figures in the health sector.

This new licensing framework allows developers, research institutions, and investors to create and implement cutting-edge medical software in Saudi Arabia without the need to establish physical production facilities. By focusing on the regulation of medical software for devices and supplies, SFDA aims to position the Kingdom as a leader in global digital health innovation.

The initiative also seeks to enhance Saudi Arabia’s diagnostic and treatment capabilities by encouraging the integration of advanced digital technologies in healthcare. The SFDA highlighted that digital tools have become essential in modern healthcare, enabling more accurate diagnostics and improving patient outcomes.

With this licensing framework, Saudi Arabia is set to ensure that its healthcare sector aligns with the latest technological standards, while maintaining strict quality and safety protocols, said an SFDA statement.
