Saudi Arabia launches project to preserve legacy of Arab poets

The country's authorities have called for the labelling of places associated with prominent writers

Saudi Arabia's Ministry of Culture has launched a project to map places associated with prominent Arab poets from the pre-Islamic period, as reported by Arab News.

The initiative envisages that municipal, village governments as well as housing organisations will actively cooperate with the Ministry of Culture. The project has already marked numerous sites in the Saudi capital Riyadh where famous poets of the past have lived, including Laila Al-Akhiliya, Qays Ibn Al-Mulawwah, Imru’ Al-Qays, and Labid Ibn Rabi’ah.

In the capital's Qassim neighbourhood, landmarks such as the Al-Shanana Tower in Al-Rass, associated with the poet Zuhair bin Abi Salma, have been documented.

By identifying sites and placing signposts near them, the ministry aims to preserve Arab cultural heritage for new generations, the publication said.
