Saudi Arabia uncovers largest sea turtle nesting site in the Red Sea to advance biodiversity conservation

The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, through the General Organisation for the Conservation of Coral Reefs and Marine Turtles in the Red Sea (SHAMS), has revealed the discovery of the largest known sea turtle nesting site within Saudi waters. Located on the Four Sisters Islands, Malathu, Dahreb, Marmar, and Jadir, this critical habitat supports a significant number of endangered green and critically endangered hawksbill turtles. 

Over 2,500 turtle nests have already been documented on these islands, highlighting their importance as a breeding ground in the Red Sea.

In a statement, SHAMS CEO Dr. Khaled Isfahani announced that the islands have been designated as a species management area to protect these nesting sites, aligning with Saudi Vision 2030's environmental goals to preserve natural ecosystems. 

This designation is part of Saudi Arabia’s broader target to convert 30 per cent of its land and marine environments into protected areas by 2030. This is reported by Saudi Press Agency (SPA).

The Four Sisters Islands stand out for their consistent use by sea turtles, who return to these nesting sites annually, underscoring the need for stringent conservation efforts. SHAMS is developing a comprehensive management strategy to protect these critical habitats, with environmental teams having identified over 180 nesting sites along the Red Sea coast.

This initiative not only supports biodiversity but also aims to foster sustainable tourism and recreational activities that can coexist with environmental preservation. Protecting sea turtles is essential to maintaining the balance of marine ecosystems, as these species play a key role in the health of seagrass beds and coral reefs.

The discovery and conservation efforts reflect the goals of the Saudi Green Initiative and Vision 2030, reaffirming Saudi Arabia’s dedication to preserving its natural heritage and marine biodiversity for future generations.
