September 23: National Day of Saudi Arabia

We will explore the history, traditions, and significance of Saudi Arabia’s National Day

Saudi Arabia’s National Day, celebrated on 23 September, marks a significant milestone in the nation’s history. It commemorates the pivotal moment in 1932 when King Abdulaziz Al Saud officially unified the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. This day is not only a tribute to the country’s past but also a celebration of its present achievements and future aspirations.

Historical Background of Saudi Arabia’s National Day

The path towards the unification of Saudi Arabia began in the early 20th century. Until 1932, the region was divided into several tribal territories and principalities. A key figure in unifying these territories was King Abdul Aziz bin Abdul Rahman Al Saud, who united the disparate regions under his rule through a series of strategic alliances.

On 23 September 1932, King Abdulaziz issued a royal decree uniting the various regions into a single sovereign state. This day was declared National Day, a symbol of national pride and unity. Unification was not only a political achievement but also an important moment in the cultural and social consolidation of the Saudi people.

The Declaration laid the foundation for subsequent modernisation and development. It also set the stage for Saudi Arabia's role on the world stage, especially in the context of its strategic location and vast natural resources.

Traditions and Celebrations of National Day

Saudi Arabia’s National Day is characterised by national pride, with citizens and officials alike participating in festivities that reflect the country’s rich cultural heritage and achievements.

National Day celebrations include public events such as parades, fireworks, and concerts. Major cities, including Riyadh, Jeddah, and Dhahran, host large-scale events that feature performances by renowned artists, traditional dances, and displays of Saudi culture. The celebrations are marked by the display of the national flag, which symbolises the unity and sovereignty of the nation.

Educational institutions and cultural organisations organise special programmes to highlight the significance of the National Day. These programmes include lectures, exhibitions, and workshops that focus on the history of Saudi Arabia, the achievements of King Abdulaziz, and the country’s development over the decades.

Official Ceremonies of the Event

The Royal Family plays a significant role in the National Day celebrations. Official ceremonies are held at the royal palace, where King Salman and other members of the royal family address the nation, reflecting on the country’s progress and future prospects. These speeches highlight the achievements of the kingdom and reinforce the values of unity and national pride.

Leaders of the BRICS nations expressed their congratulations to Saudi Arabia on the occasion of its 94th National Day.

UAE President Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan took to social media to express his heartfelt congratulations to Saudi Arabia's King Salman and Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, highlighting the deep-rooted bonds of friendship and shared aspirations for prosperity between the two nations.

President of Egypt Abdel Fattah El-Sisi also sent cables of congratulations to the heads of Saudi Arabia on the Kingdom's 94th National Day.

BRICS+ leaders also expressed their congratulations to Saudi Arabia.

Belarus President Aleksandr Lukashenko has congratulated the King of Saudi Arabia on National Day, the press service of the President of Belarus informs.

"The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia is strengthening its position as an authoritative country in global and regional politics, playing an important role in the largest integration associations, and confidently creating the economy of the future," says the congratulatory message of the President of Belarus.

President of the Republic of Kazakhstan, Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, also congratulated the people of Saudi Arabia.
