More than 800,000 full-time and part-time students passed the matriculation examinations
This year, 82.9 per cent of South Africa's Grade 12 leavers obtained a high school diploma, the highest in the country's history. This is reported by Prensa Latina, a partner of TV BRICS.
According to the Department of Education, more than 800,000 full-time and part-time students passed the matriculation examinations at the end of 2023.
The National Senior Certificate (NSC) is the secondary school leaving certificate in South Africa.
In a related development, Minister of Basic Education Matsie Motshekga said that in absolute terms, 572 983 learners passed the examinations.
Praising the sector's performance over the past 10 years, the Minister recalled that, among others, Grade 12 learners achieved a pass rate of 80,1 per cent in 2022 and 76,4 per cent in 2021.
The top performing provinces were the central Free State, south-eastern KwaZulu-Natal, southern Western Cape and central Gauteng.
"There is no doubt that the basic education system has started to achieve the desired stability," Motshekga noted.
