SUSU launches seven science and technology projects
South Ural State University (SUSU) presented the projects that have won the competitive selection for subsidies from the Chelyabinsk Oblast budget for the implementation of scientific and technical projects included in the list of the Ural Interregional Research and Education Center (UIREC).
The initiatives aim to address current challenges in the automotive and mechanical engineering industries, to create environmentally friendly production and recycling of copper smelter slags, to develop modern digital control technologies for high-tech products, and to automate control in the power sector.
For example, together with the Ural plant in Miass, SUSU is developing a modern transfer case (an important mechanical component in the transmission) for all-wheel drive vehicles and wheeled vehicles. The result in 2025 should be the serial launch of a new range of domestically produced transfer boxes for Ural vehicles.
After the completion of the large-scale investment project, the South Urals company plans to supply this product to other Russian heavy-duty truck manufacturers as well.
An environmentally friendly approach to the disposal of copper smelter slags is provided by a project of SUSU and "Teplostroy" on integrated recycling of industrial waste. It is proposed to extract iron from them and use it to make wear-resistant cast-iron grinding balls and construction fittings.
In order to improve the weight and dimensions of electromechanical converters in variable frequency drive systems, the Snezhinsk Plant of Special Electrical Machines (SPSEM) received grant support. Here they are developing a series of electric machines for the overhead drive system based on synchronous reactive and asynchronous motors.
And the Chelyabinsk Electrical Equipment Plant (CEEP) is working with SUSU to develop a system that will monitor electricity distribution failures. Innovative digital solutions are now being sought for diagnostics and data transmission in small-scale switchgear.
South Ural State University is a transformational university, where innovative research is carried out in most of the country's development priorities. In accordance with the Strategy for Scientific and Technological Development of the Russian Federation, the university focuses on implementing major scientific interdisciplinary projects in the fields of digital industry, materials science and ecology. The university acts as a regional project office for UIREC.
The Urals Interregional Research and Educational Centre for Advanced Production Technologies and Materials (UIREC) was established to unite the potential of educational and scientific organisations of the real sector of the Sverdlovsk, Chelyabinsk and Kurgan regions as part of the national project "Science and Universities".
