UAE and Kenya sign co-operation document on technology and AI

The UAE Ministry of Investment and Kenya's Ministry of Information, Communications and Digital Economy have signed an important co-operation memorandum. This pact sets goals and a framework to support investment in digitalisation and technology.

In line with the Investment Memorandum, there will be an examination of investment prospects in digital infrastructure and artificial intelligence services in Kenya. Furthermore, there is a strategy in place to initiate data center strategies with a combined capacity reaching 1,000 megawatts.

The evaluation of opportunities for creating advanced language models in artificial intelligence is also part of the plan. This is reported by Emirates News Agency (WAM), a partner of TV BRICS.

The document was signed by Mohamed Hassan Alsuwaidi, Minister of Investment and Eliud Owalo, Cabinet Secretary at the Ministry of Information, Communications and the Digital Economy in Kenya.

It is noticeable that the digital economy in Kenya is growing significantly, primarily driven by the Information and Communication Technology (ICT) sector, which has grown by 23 per cent annually over the last ten years.

According to the paper, the aim is to promote the development of digital infrastructure as well as introduce incentives to support relevant initiatives in this area.

In addition, the presented concept of a “digital corridor” is a key element of this memorandum, ensuring the secure exchange and transfer of data between the UAE and Kenya.

The document was signed after the finalisation of the Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) between the UAE and Kenya, which has strengthened investment ties and significantly increased bilateral trade, reaching US$3,1 billion in 2023.
