UNESCO approves 18 new Global Geoparks, one of which is Brazilian

UNESCO's Executive Board has created a global geopark in Latin America – Brazil's Uberaba

UNESCO Global Geopark status was established in 2015 to recognise geological heritage of international importance. Geoparks play a vital role for local communities, linking the conservation of valuable geological heritage with community outreach and a sustainable approach to development. This is reported by Prensa Latina, a partner of TV BRICS.

UNESCO says it continues to promote the concept in regions where geoparks are less common or numerous, especially in Africa, Arab countries and small island developing states.

In addition to the Brazilian site, six Geoparks have been established in China, two in France and one each in Croatia, Denmark, Finland, Greece, Hungary, Poland, Portugal, Spain and Croatia.

The UNESCO Uberaba World Geopark is located in the second largest biome in South America, in southeastern Brazil.

The geopark's motto "Land of Giants" refers to its rich palaeontological heritage. More than 10,000 fossils have been discovered in the area, including dinosaurs, crocodilians, turtles and countless other prehistoric creatures.
