Uzbekistan prepares to launch first 6U scientific satellite by 2028
National space programme advances with Mirzo Ulugbek mission and astronaut training initiative

Uzbekistan has begun forming a specialised engineering corps and training experts for the development of its first national scientific satellite, Mirzo Ulugbek, in the 6U CubeSat format, with launch scheduled for 2028.
According to the press service of the President of Uzbekistan, the initiative marks a significant step in the country’s emerging space programme. In parallel with satellite development, preparations are under way to train the nation’s first astronaut.
The inaugural flight of an Uzbek cosmonaut is expected to be short-term, lasting between 10 and 14 days. During this mission, a range of scientific studies may be conducted in orbit, as reported by Kazinform, a partner of TV BRICS.
Proposed research areas include medicine and biology, with a focus on remote diagnostics and assessing the effectiveness of locally developed medicinal extracts. Plant genetics experiments are also under consideration, including the testing of drought- and salt-resistant crop varieties and modelling closed agricultural biosystems suitable for controlled environments. In addition, materials science studies could examine the heat accumulation and dissipation properties of various materials, fabrics and fibres in space conditions.
Authorities are also considering hosting the International Astronautical Congress in the historic city of Samarkand in 2028. Leading space organisations from China, India, Russia and other countries have reportedly expressed interest in participating
