Ivan Kupala Day

Ivan Kupala Day is one of the most mystical holidays in the national calendar. It is associated with the summer solstice and the bloom of nature.

On the festival's eve, women would gather healing herbs: it was believed that on Kupala morning the mermaids would give the plants to the people as protection. When the dew would appear on the gathered leaves, the herbs would take on their healing power. It was widely believed that fern was supposed to bloom once a year, just on Ivan Kupala Day. It is better to look for it in the woods. In order to find the scarlet flower, you should not be afraid of evil powers.
