Celebrated at the beginning of Chingam, the first month of the Malayalam Calendar, the festival marks the annual homecoming of King Mahabali who is believed to have come from the nether world to check on his citizens. It is said that the state witnessed Golden period under King.

As the idea is to welcome the beloved king Mahabali, a traditional flower carpet named ‘Pookalam’ is placed in the doorway of every home.
