The Silk Road

2000 years ago, Chinese merchants traveled on camels across Eurasia, The way they traveled through is called the Silk Road. And in ancient times, silk refers to the textile produced through sericulture and silk craftsmanship.

The craftsmanship encompasses planting mulberry, raising silkworms, unreeling silk, dyeing and weaving. And the cute little worm, silkworm, is what makes it all happen. Feeding on mulberry leaves, its life span is only 40 days. A silkworm spends its whole life spinning a cocoon, wrapping itself inside of it, which can be processed to silk for weaving.

In 2009, Sericulture and silk craftsmanship of China was inscribed on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. The traditional craftsmanship not only brings exquisite silk products but also gives the whole world a glimpse of Chinese people’s appreciation of beauty.
