Chile launches major metro project to transform Santiago’s transport network

Chile’s President Gabriel Boric has inaugurated this week the construction of Line 9 of the Santiago Metro, a major project that will link the capital's city centre with the southern commune of Puente Alto.

The new line will stretch 27 kilometres, include 19 stations, and cut travel time on the route to just 35 minutes, benefiting an estimated two million people, according to Prensa Latina, a partner of TV BRICS.

The metro extension will run through eight communes: Recoleta, Santiago, San Miguel, San Joaquin, La Granja, San Ramon, La Pintana and Puente Alto. With an investment of US$2.73 billion, the line is expected to open in 2030. Officials say the project will also create around 20,000 jobs during its development.

At the groundbreaking ceremony, Boric stressed the social and economic impact of the expansion, describing it as a transformative step for residents’ daily lives.
