China creates AI-powered wearable device to support independent navigation for blind people

Chinese scientists have announced the development of an advanced artificial intelligence-powered wearable system designed to improve mobility and spatial awareness for visually impaired individuals. This is reported by Xinhua News Agency, a partner of TV BRICS.

This innovative wearable device combines visual, auditory, and tactile feedback mechanisms, enabling real-time environmental awareness for users. It incorporates a compact camera to gather visual data from the surrounding area, which is processed by AI algorithms capable of identifying obstacles, routes, and key objects.

Instructions are then relayed to the user through bone-conduction headphones and wrist-mounted electronic skin patches, providing clear navigational cues. These signals guide users to safely move forward, turn, or adjust their path, improving their ability to navigate independently.

According to the source, the system’s performance was rigorously tested in both virtual and real-life environments, involving humanoid robots and visually impaired volunteers. The results demonstrated marked improvements in navigation accuracy and efficiency.
