China develops high-efficiency flexible tandem solar cells with record-breaking performance

These solar cells offer applications in wearable electronics, curved architectural surfaces, electric vehicles, and aerospace technology

Scientists at a leading Chinese research institution have achieved a breakthrough in solar energy technology, developing ultra-thin, flexible tandem solar cells with a record-high power conversion efficiency of 23.4 per cent. This is reported by China Daily, a partner of TV BRICS.

The innovation integrates perovskite and copper indium gallium selenide (CIGS) layers, creating an advanced multi-layer structure capable of significantly enhancing energy capture.

With a thickness comparable to a human hair, these next-generation solar cells offer versatile applications in wearable electronics, curved architectural surfaces, electric vehicles, and aerospace technology.

The stacked design allows each layer to capture different wavelengths of sunlight, maximising energy conversion efficiency.

The lightweight and highly flexible nature of these solar cells opens up new possibilities for integration into various industries, reducing installation and transportation costs compared to conventional solar panels.
