Ethiopia receives legal registration certificate of country's archaeological site

Artefacts over a million years old have been discovered at the site

The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) has registered the archaeological and palaeontological site of Melka Konture, located in Ethiopia. This is reported by Fana Broadcasting Copropare, a partner of TV BRICS.

The Director of the UNESCO World Heritage Centre, Lazare Eloundou Assomo, presented the document to Mahlet Hailu, Ethiopia's Ambassador in Paris, where the organisation's headquarters are located.

Addis Ababa had earlier proposed the inscription of the site on the World Heritage List at the 46th session of the UNESCO World Heritage Committee in July 2024 in New Delhi.

Melka Konture is located in the central part of the Oromia region at an altitude of two thousand metres, 50 kilometres from Addis Ababa. The archaeological complex is a group of Stone Age sites scattered over an area of 80 square kilometres, in the Awash River valley.
