New strategy focuses on forest restoration, scientific monitoring and community participation to safeguard one of Asia’s rarest wild cats

India has launched a comprehensive conservation strategy for the clouded leopard, strengthening efforts to protect one of Asia’s most elusive wild cat species and preserve the fragile forest ecosystems of the country’s northeast. This is reported by ANI, a TV BRICS partner.
The Clouded Leopard Conservation Action Plan (CAP) was unveiled during the 91st meeting of the Standing Committee of the National Board for Wild Life held in Coimbatore in July 2026. The initiative aims to create a long-term framework for habitat protection, scientific research and sustainable conservation practices.
The action plan identifies 14 priority conservation landscapes across Northeast India, with a focus on restoring forest connectivity and protecting ecological corridors that allow clouded leopards and other wildlife species to move safely between habitats.
A major element of the strategy is the expansion of scientific monitoring through advanced research methods, including camera trapping, wildlife surveys, genetic studies and environmental DNA analysis. These tools will help researchers better understand population trends, habitat requirements and threats facing the species.
The clouded leopard plays an important role in maintaining the ecological balance of forest landscapes in Northeast India. By combining habitat restoration, technology-based monitoring, community engagement and international cooperation, the new conservation framework seeks to strengthen the long-term survival prospects of this rare wild cat.
