Presidents of Russia and Indonesia agree to accelerate implementation of joint projects in economy and energy

Talks between the heads of state held at the Kremlin

Talks between Vladimir Putin, President of Russia, and Prabowo Subianto, President of Indonesia, took place in Moscow. The parties discussed the development of the strategic partnership, economic cooperation, and the international agenda, according to the Kremlin website.

Prabowo Subianto thanked the Russian side for organising the reception at short notice and noted that, during his working visit, he had managed to hold productive meetings with representatives of Russian ministries and companies.

"The purpose of my visit today is, first and foremost, to express our gratitude personally to you and also to the Government of the Russian Federation for the support provided by the Russian Federation to the Republic of Indonesia and for the swift manner in which Indonesia was able to join BRICS. I would also like to express my appreciation for the support that you personally provide on issues of importance to Indonesia. […] At present, it is extremely important for us to conduct joint consultations, discuss the further development of the situation, and also consider priority areas of cooperation, namely cooperation in the fields of the economy and energy"

He also stated that he is ready to personally contribute to accelerating the implementation of projects, particularly in matters related to financial transactions.

Vladimir Putin noted that relations between the two countries have acquired a special character.

"Last year, our trade turnover increased by 12.5 per cent. […] We have repeatedly identified the most promising areas of cooperation: energy, space, agriculture, industrial cooperation, and pharmaceuticals. We attach great importance to developing humanitarian ties, including in culture and education. Of course, our foreign ministries also maintain close and active coordination across international platforms. Indonesia has become a full member of BRICS, which opens up additional opportunities for cooperation, including between Indonesia and the Eurasian Economic Union"

Trade between Russia and Indonesia has grown by more than 30 per cent over the past five years, according to the website of the Russian Ministry of Economic Development. It is noted that Indonesia is interested in increasing supplies of coffee, cocoa, rubber, and fruit to Russia, as well as in importing Russian energy resources.

In December 2025, the countries (through the EAEU) signed a free trade agreement. Indonesia is opening preferential access for 90 per cent of goods, with the average tariff set to decrease from 10.2 per cent to 2 per cent. This was stated by Sergey Tolchenov in an exclusive interview with TV BRICS. He added that the agreement would allow bilateral trade to double within three to five years.

Indonesia became a full member of BRICS in January 2025.
