Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova summarises results of Russia's BRICS Chairmanship in first half of 2024

Representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry Maria Zakharova presented a report in Moscow. She spoke about the results of Russia's BRICS chairmanship in the first half of 2024. This is reported by the official website of the Russian Foreign Ministry.

Within the framework of the presidency, more than 130 events have already taken place in various areas of cooperation, including politics and security, economy and finance, as well as cultural and humanitarian contacts.

According to Zakharova, several high-level meetings have been held, including a meeting of BRICS foreign ministers in Nizhny Novgorod, where an expanded session was held with the participation of countries of the global South and East, as well as representatives of regional organisations. Meetings were held in Moscow with the BRICS foreign ministers to discuss prospects for deepening cooperation and promoting BRICS.

The BRICS countries also actively interact on international platforms such as the United Nations. For example, a joint declaration of the BRICS delegations was signed at the 6th UN Environment Assembly in Nairobi. 

In the economic sphere, the BRICS countries are discussing sustainable development, supporting the multilateral trading system and improving the global financial architecture. Ministerial meetings have been held in various areas, including tourism, sports, environment, youth affairs, economy, industry and trade, he said.

The official noted that the main initiatives of the BRICS countries are aimed at consolidating the main results of cooperation of the group's member states in the fields of trade, agriculture, health, transport, geology, culture and humanities, as well as sports. 

Among them are Russia's proposal to create a grain trade platform to ensure food security, the establishment of the BRICS Working Group on Nuclear Medicine, an agreement to launch a regular mechanism of interaction in the transport sector, discussions on the formation of the BRICS Geological Platform, and holding cultural and humanitarian events such as the BRICS International Film Festival. 

"From 12 to 23 June this year, Kazan hosted the BRICS Sports Games in an open format for the first time. Athletes from almost 90 countries took part in them," Zakharova said.

The BRICS summit will be held in Kazan from 22 to 24 October 2024 and is designed to strengthen the BRICS position on the international stage.
