South Africa launches initiative to plant 1 million trees in single day

South Africa’s plan seeks to create more sustainable urban environments

South Africa has set a target to plant 1 million trees in a single day on 24 September 2025, as reported by Xinhua News Agency, a partner of TV BRICS.

Announced by Deputy Minister of Environment, Forestry and Fisheries, Bernice Swarts, the initiative aims to mobilise government bodies, businesses, non-governmental organisations, and local communities in a large-scale tree-planting campaign.

The nationwide effort is designed to enhance urban green spaces, support biodiversity, and mitigate climate change effects. Through these efforts, South Africa’s initiative seeks to create more sustainable urban environments.

Babagana Ahmadu, Representative of the Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations in South Africa, highlighted the crucial role of urban forests in addressing challenges such as rapid urbanisation, climate change, and socio-economic disparities. He emphasised that green spaces improve air quality, reduce urban heat, and contribute to mental and physical well-being.

The FAO has reaffirmed its commitment to working alongside the South African government to ensure urban forestry initiatives support ecological sustainability and food security through agroforestry and community gardens.
