Kazakhstan launches construction of 300 MW solar power plant with China partnership

Construction of a joint Kazakhstan-China 300 MW solar power plant with an energy storage system has entered its main phase in Kazakhstan’s Turkestan Region, with the first batch of pile foundations now completed. According to regional authorities, the milestone marks the transition of the project into active implementation. The initiative is being developed with total investments estimated at US$307 million, reports Kazinform, a partner of TV BRICS.

Governor of Turkestan Region Nuralkhan Kusherov stated that President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev continues to prioritise the expansion of the country’s green economy and the development of renewable energy sources. He noted that the region’s climate conditions create favourable opportunities for alternative energy projects.

Preparatory work for the facility began in December last year, when a time capsule ceremony marked the launch of the project. Since then, earthworks have been completed, while office premises, residential blocks and warehouse facilities have already been constructed. Installation of the main equipment has now commenced.

Authorities expect the solar power station to generate approximately 674 million kilowatt-hours of clean electricity annually after commissioning in 2027. During the construction stage, around 500 jobs are set to be created, providing additional momentum for the economic and industrial development of the Turkestan Region.

The regional administration highlighted that the project is receiving comprehensive support from Kazakhstan’s government and relevant ministries. Officials also described the initiative as a practical outcome of the strategic partnership between Kazakhstan and China. The agreement underpinning the project was signed following the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit and became the first energy initiative launched within the framework of the intergovernmental accord between the two countries.
