Oman advances regional conservation plan for Arabian Sea humpback whales
The initiative aims to strengthen regional cooperation in research and monitoring to protect one of the world’s rarest whale populations
A regional conservation management plan for Arabian Sea humpback whales has been formally adopted. This was reported by Al-Shabiba, a partner of TV BRICS.
The initiative aims to strengthen cooperation between countries in research, monitoring and conservation to protect the rare whale population and preserve its natural habitat.
Estimates indicate that fewer than 100 Arabian Sea humpback whales remain in the region. The conservation plan establishes a framework for coordinated action to support the species and improve understanding of its population and habitat.
Oman has played an important role in developing the initiative, contributing to more than two decades of research and scientific work aimed at protecting these whales and preserving their population.
The adoption of the plan marks an important step towards translating regional cooperation into practical conservation measures. Continued collaboration among regional partners is expected to support research, monitoring and the long-term preservation of Arabian Sea humpback whales.
