More than 50 people die in Brazil due to heavy rains and hurricanes

The country's authorities reported on losses from natural disasters for 2023

In Brazil's southern state of Rio Grande do Sul, heavy rains and hurricanes have killed at least 55 people and 74 people are missing. About 32,000 people have been left homeless. This is reported by Brasil 247, a partner of TV BRICS.

According to a report by the National Confederation of Municipalities, natural disasters caused R$105.4 billion (US$20.6 billion) in damage to Brazil last year.

The information was collected through reports from state and town halls to the S2iD Integrated System on Natural Disasters, a platform managed by the Ministry of Regional Integration and Development.

Natural disasters affected 37.3 million Brazilians in 2023, leaving about 126,300 homeless, about 717,900 displaced and 258 people dead.

Losses from drought were 51 per cent and from rainfall 48.7 per cent.
