South Africa's president signs into law national health bill

The move will transform South Africa's health system and ensure universal health coverage

During his last address to the nation in February this year, South African President Cyril Ramaphosa said the state was working to improve the quality of healthcare and ensure equitable access, given that the state of the country's healthcare system has a significant impact on people's lives. This is reported by Prensa Latina, a partner of TV BRICS.

During the debate on the speech, Health Minister Joe Phaahla announced that the so-called NHI bill project will be implemented in two phases from 2024 to 2026, while between 2026 and 2028, the government will focus on establishing the NHI Board and CEO and several key committees of the NHI Foundation.

The NHI Bill, passed by the National Assembly and the National Council of Provinces last year, seeks to provide free on-call health care to all South Africans, both in public and private health facilities.
