Special session of the Indian Parliament began its work

Eight legislative initiatives are likely to be taken up during the session

Union Minister of Parliamentary Affairs Pralhad Joshi had said the previous day that five sittings would be held during the extraordinary session of Parliament from 18 to 22 September and said eight legislative initiatives were likely to be taken up.

On 17 September, Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar hoisted the national flag atop "Gaja Dwar", the northern entrance of the new parliament building. Lok Sabha (lower house of Parliament) Speaker Om Birla was also present on the occasion.

Earlier, Union Minister for Parliamentary Affairs Joshi appealed to all parties to actively cooperate and support the smooth functioning of the two Houses of Parliament.

The meeting of all leaders of political parties in Parliament was attended by various ministers, including Indian Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal, who is also the Leader of the House in Rajya Sabha (Upper House of Parliament), Indian Ministers of State for Parliamentary Affairs Arjun Ram Meghwal and Vellamvelly Muraleedharan, and 51 leaders from 34 countries.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi during the five-day special session of Parliament said on Monday that the achievements of Indians are being discussed everywhere and this is the result of united efforts during the 75 years of the history of the country’s Parliament.

Initiating the discussion on ‘Parliamentary journey of 75 years starting from Samvidhan Sabha – achievements, experiences, memories and learnings’ in the Lok Sabha, the Prime Minister said that the success of Chandrayaan-3 has not only made India but the world proud, as reported by ANI, a partner of TV BRICS.

"At this time, we all are feeling an atmosphere of enthusiasm and a new confidence in the entire country. At the same time, this session of Parliament is taking place. This session is short, but in terms of time, it is very big. This is a session of historic decisions. A speciality of this session is that the journey of 75 years is starting from a new destination," said Modi.

The Prime Minister also referred to the Parliament shifting to the new building from Tuesday, the second day of the Special Session of Parliament, which will continue till 22 September.

"Now, while taking forward the journey from a new place, we have to make the country a developed country by 2047. For this, all the decisions will be taken in the new Parliament building," he added.

The Prime Minister urged all members of parliament to contribute effectively to this session by leaving old problems behind and directing efforts towards bringing about new favourable changes in the new home of the Indian Parliament.

In his speech, Modi also highlighted the success of the G20 Summit held in the national capital earlier this month, emphasising the importance of Indian contribution to the global community.

"India will always be proud that we became the voice of the Global South during the G20 Summit and that the African Union became a permanent member of the G20. All this is a signal of India's bright future"
