Ethiopian officials discuss development of infrastructure projects

The country plans to achieve middle-income status by 2030

Speaking on the subject, Ethiopia's Minister of State for Urban Planning and Infrastructure, Wondimu Seta, emphasised the country's efforts to ensure building a more resilient and sustainable future, such as developing a regulatory framework that also takes into account the effects of climate change.

Seta drew attention to the many ongoing projects that serve as a foundation for future social and economic transformation and should meet current development needs while ensuring long-term sustainability.

Speaking of action for the environment, he recalled the Green Legacy initiative from 2019 in Ethiopia, which has planted millions of tree seedlings to combat deforestation. This is reported by Prensa Latina, a partner of TV BRICS.

However, he acknowledged, there is need for policies that will protect the atmosphere and ensure the sustainability of infrastructure. In this regard, he said that the previous building policy was being reviewed as it did not include sustainability and climate adaptation.

For her part, head of the UN Office for Project Services (UNOPS) multi-country office, Worknesh Mekonnen, said the conference initiative is timely for Ethiopia as a country that is on an ambitious path to achieve middle-income status by 2030.

The infrastructure development efforts in middle-income countries are aimed at both supporting the management of sustainable and climate-resilient structures projects and providing technical assistance to governments implementing them on a large scale.
