In August, steel production and sales increased in Brazil
Brazilian steel production reached 3.1 million tonnes in August, that is 14.1% up from the same month in 2020. Rolled steel production amounted to 2.3 million tons, which is 25.7% higher than in August 2020. 748 thousand tons of finished products were sold during this period, which is 19.1% more compared to the same month of 2020. The data was published by Instituto Aço Brasil.
According to the report, sales in the domestic market increased by 10.4% compared to August 2020 and reached 2 million tons. Apparent consumption of metal products amounted to 2.3 million tons, which is 22.7% higher than in the same period in 2020.
August export amounted to 865 thousand tons or $ 868 million, which increased by 2.9% and 128.3%, respectively, compared to the same month in 2020. Imports in August 2021 amounted to 461 thousand tons, or $ 463 million, an increase of 254.9% in quantity and 203.7% in value compared to August last year.
Aço Brasil also published cumulative data for the first eight months of the year. From January to August 2021, Brazilian steel production was 24.1 million tonnes, which is 20.9% more than in the same period last year. Rolled steel production in the same period amounted to 17.9 million tons, which is 31.6% more than in 2020. From January to August 2021, the production of semi-finished products for sale amounted to 5.5 million tons - an increase of 2.4%.
Domestic sales totaled 16 million tonnes from January to August 2021, up 34.2% over the same period last year.
The apparent national consumption of steel products was 18.8 million tonnes compared to August 2021. This result represents an increase of 41.7% compared to the same period in 2020.
Imports reached 3.5 million tonnes before August 2021, an increase of 163.9% compared to the same period last year. In terms of value, imports reached $ 3.2 billion, an increase of 125.2% over the same period.
Exports from January to August 2021 reached 6.9 million tons or 5.5 billion US dollars. These values represent, a decrease of 10.9% and an increase of 46.2% respectively over the same period in 2020.
According to the Institute, the numbers show that the Brazilian steel industry is producing and serving its customers in excess of the volumes confirmed prior to the COVID-19 pandemic. According to the report, the market is fully provided for with no exceptions.
