India opens public libraries in 21 states

The initiative aims to popularise reading and increase access to knowledge

The Indian state of Gujarat is actively developing a network of public libraries to make reading accessible to all. This initiative started with the "Vanche Gujarat" (Reading Gujarat) campaign launched by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his tenure as Chief Minister of the state. This is reported by ANI, a partner of TV BRICS.

Now, under the leadership of Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel, it has been decided to open new public libraries in 50 talukas (sub-districts) of 21 districts of the state.

Special attention is being given to tribal communities: libraries will be opened in 14 talukas of 7 tribal districts to encourage reading among members of these groups.

The Gujarat government is also increasing financial support for libraries, including increasing the subsidy by 100 per cent for public libraries, increasing grant rates for different types of libraries, and increasing the award amount for the best libraries and librarians.

The aim of these initiatives is to popularise reading, increase access to knowledge, and create a competitive environment in the provision of library services in Gujarat.
