BRICS transport ministers adopt final declaration to expand transport cooperation
The declaration establishes a common approach to developing sustainable transport systems, advancing digitalisation and strengthening logistics cooperation among the BRICS countries
BRICS transport ministers adopted a final declaration on expanding cooperation in the transport sector during the 3rd BRICS Transport Ministers' Meeting, held in Nagpur, Maharashtra, under India's chairmanship, according to the Press Information Bureau of the Government of India.
The declaration outlines the key areas of cooperation among the BRICS countries, including the development of sustainable infrastructure, the adoption of circular economy principles in the transport sector, the use of Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF), the reduction of carbon emissions in transport, the development of urban transport hubs, the strengthening of logistics chains, and the establishment of a BRICS Railway Research Network.
"Our resolution has just been passed. It is very important as far as the BRICS countries are concerned, which cover 40 per cent of the world's population. We are committed to the futuristic development of the transport sector, to create cooperation, coordination and communication between the stakeholders. This resolution indicates a lot of new technology and innovation in the transport sector. It covers the road sector, railways, aviation and water transport," said India's Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari, as quoted by ANI, a partner of TV BRICS.
He called on the BRICS countries to strengthen cooperation in building sustainable and future-ready transport systems, noting that the grouping has unique potential to shape the future of global mobility through innovation, partnership and shared responsibility.
Gadkari noted that India is actively developing its transport infrastructure by expanding its road network, modernising its railways, introducing environmentally friendly technologies and creating conditions for more efficient multimodal connectivity by integrating different modes of transport into a single system for faster and more efficient logistics.
The minister reaffirmed India's commitment to deepening cooperation through knowledge sharing, capacity building, technological collaboration and joint research in such areas as green hydrogen, electric mobility and alternative fuels.
On 1 January 2026, the BRICS Chairmanship officially passed from Brazil to India.
