Saudi Arabia discusses new water security initiatives at seminar in Riyadh

Saudi Arabia's Ministry of Environment reaffirmed its commitment to preserving the country's water resources at a seminar in Riyadh entitled “Water Springs in the Kingdom: Status, Legislation, and Sustainability." This meeting emphasised the importance of springs and aflajas (ancient irrigation systems) for water security and rural development, reports Arab News.

During the workshop, experts discussed the best ways to utilise spring water for agricultural development and best practices for the rehabilitation and management of ancient water systems.

It was noted that increased rainfall, higher water levels, and silt removal have helped revitalise some springs. The importance of using modern technology combined with traditional methods for better water management was also highlighted.

Several initiatives aimed at water conservation and management were presented during the workshop, including:

• establishing farms near springs;

• maintaining water channels;

• redirecting surplus water for afforestation.

Experts from Saudi Arabia and other Arab countries participated in the workshop, allowing for the exchange of experiences and best practices in water management.
