BRICS Food Independence - Anastasia Golyakova
BRICS countries are actively involved in reshaping the global food order. These nations continue to show rapid growth in agriculture, emphasising their drive towards self-sufficiency and strengthening their position in world markets. China, a global leader in wheat production, continues to astonish the world with record production figures, while Russia confidently dictates the rules on global trading platforms.
With each passing year, the global economy becomes increasingly complex and interconnected. In this context, BRICS countries are playing an ever more significant role in agribusiness and geopolitics.
As of 1 January 2024, BRICS has welcomed several new members, including Egypt, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Ethiopia, and Iran, underscoring the growing influence of this group in the global economy and politics. The complex challenges facing the world economy require joint efforts from the union’s members. The participating countries are key players in global food security, which is particularly crucial given rising food inflation and the vulnerability of supply chains.
The inclusion of new members, such as Ethiopia, in BRICS highlights the collective potential that can significantly impact global food security and sovereignty. This is especially vital for African countries, which are heavily dependent on agricultural imports.
Moreover, it is important to note the strategic actions of other BRICS states. For instance, Brazil is actively working on strengthening its own food security and developing relations with key partners, such as African nations. The UAE plans to increase investments in this area.
Thus, modern global food security policy is becoming a key element of geopolitical strategy. The future of this action plan depends on the decisions made today. Will BRICS countries become the main players in this field, altering the global order? The answer to this question will shape the future of global food policy.
