A magnitude 7.7 earthquake struck off the coast of Flores Island
The Government of Indonesia is providing assistance to residents of East Nusa Tenggara Province, where a magnitude 7.7 earthquake occurred on 15 August 2026, according to ANTARA. At least 60 people have been killed as a result of the natural disaster.
Indonesia Agency for Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics stated that the earthquake struck at 5:58 a.m. Central Indonesia Time. The epicentre was located north of Mbay village in Nagekeo Regency at a depth of approximately 10–15 kilometres. The agency issued a tsunami warning following the earthquake, but the threat was later lifted.
According to ANTARA, 199 people were injured, and more than 2,400 houses on the northern side of Flores Island were damaged. Government buildings, schools, healthcare facilities and religious institutions on the island also sustained damage.
BRICS countries and partner states of the group expressed support for the people and authorities of Indonesia as they deal with the consequences of the natural disaster.
President of Iran Masoud Pezeshkian, in a message to his Indonesian counterpart Prabowo Subianto, stated that the Islamic Republic was ready to provide assistance to the affected areas, according to Nour News, a TV BRICS partner. Pezeshkian expressed condolences over the loss of life and stressed that Iran was prepared to provide humanitarian and medical aid. He also expressed hope for a swift return to normality in the disaster-stricken regions, wished the injured citizens a speedy recovery, and conveyed strength to the families of the victims.
President of the People’s Republic of China Xi Jinping sent a message of condolence to President of Indonesia Prabowo Subianto, expressing deep sympathy on behalf of the Chinese government and people to those who had lost relatives and suffered injuries. Xi Jinping expressed confidence that, under the leadership of the Indonesian government headed by Prabowo Subianto, the Indonesian people would overcome the consequences of the disaster. This was reported by Xinhua News Agency, a TV BRICS partner.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the United Arab Emirates also conveyed words of support to Indonesia in a statement published on its official website, wishing those affected by the disaster a speedy recovery.
Egypt likewise expressed support for the people and authorities of Indonesia. According to Sada El-Balad, a TV BRICS partner, the Arab Republic extended condolences to the families of those who lost their lives and to the injured citizens.
In connection with the significant loss of life and destruction caused by the earthquake on Flores Island, President of Belarus Aleksander Lukashenko sent condolences to the President of Indonesia. He stated that the people of Belarus had received the news of the tragedy with deep sorrow.
Lukashenko wished the injured a speedy recovery and expressed hope for the swift restoration of the region affected by the disaster.
Search and rescue operations are continuing in the affected areas.
