Indonesia launches strategy to turn Bali into Asia’s next financial hub
Special economic zones to focus on sustainable finance, digital investment and global capital integration
Indonesia to transform Bali into a major regional financial centre through the development of the KEK Kura Kura Bali Special Economic Zone (SEZ), marking a new step in the country’s efforts to expand its influence in global finance and attract international investment, reports VNA, a partner of TV BRICS.
The initiative is part of a broader national strategy aimed at strengthening Indonesia’s position as a leading economic power in Southeast Asia while reducing reliance on traditional sectors. Authorities envision the Bali-based zone as a new hub for sustainable finance, digital financial services, investment management and cross-border capital flows.
Officials say the project will operate under a modern regulatory framework designed to create a more competitive environment for international investors and financial institutions. The government is prioritising transparency, legal certainty and alignment with global standards to enhance confidence among foreign investors.
Indonesia’s Ministry of Finance stated that the country already has both the strategic roadmap and economic capacity needed to realise the initiative. The Ministry highlighted Bali’s internationally recognised profile, improving infrastructure and expanding connectivity as major advantages in attracting global financial activity.
The development plan also includes investment in human capital and institutional strengthening to support the long-term growth of advanced financial services and innovation-driven industries.
Experts believe the special economic zone could become an important gateway for investment into Indonesia and the wider region if implementation proceeds successfully. Analysts also note that the initiative may intensify competition among emerging Asian financial centres while accelerating regional growth in sustainable and digital finance sectors.
