Brazil launches green farming drive to restore 3 million hectares of degraded land

The investments will be spread across Brazil’s main biomes

The Brazilian government has launched a major new phase of its Caminho Verde Brasil (Green Path Brazil) programme, aimed at restoring degraded land for sustainable use.

At a meeting of the Agribusiness Council (COSAG) at the Federation of Industries of the State of Sаo Paulo on Monday, Agriculture and Livestock Ministry adviser Carlos Augustin announced that the second Eco Invest Brazil auction had raised US$6 billion to fund the initiative.

The first phase will see between 1.4 and 3 million hectares recovered, with negotiations under way with international agencies for a further US$1 billion to expand the programme.

The investments will be spread across Brazil’s main biomes: the Cerrado, the Atlantic Forest, the Amazon and the Caatinga. According to the Ministry, the bulk of approved projects focus on perennial crops such as fruit and sugar cane, followed by integrated approaches like agroforestry and crop-livestock-forest systems.

COSAG president Jacyr Costa said the initiative would transform low-value land into productive, sustainable farmland, boosting food supply and environmental protection.
