Ethiopian Broadcasting Corporation begins cooperation with TV BRICS
The BRICS+ audience will have access to unique television materials about the ethnocultural diversity of Africa and the business prospects of the continent
The Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia is strengthening its presence within the BRICS information agenda shaped by TV BRICS. One of the country's largest state-owned media organisations, the Ethiopian Broadcasting Corporation (EBC), has joined the international media network. The cooperation agreement was signed by Janna Tolstikova, CEO and Editor-in-Chief of TV BRICS, and Biniyam Ero Jimma, CEO of the African media organisation. The partners agreed to exchange content and cooperate in the production of media materials aimed at strengthening cooperation among BRICS countries. With the support of TV BRICS, Ethiopia will gain direct access to up-to-date information on the activities of other BRICS member states from primary media sources and will be able to promote its own agenda through international media platforms.
"EBC, as a broadcaster of a member of BRICS, is glad to work in cooperation with TV BRICS. We agreed to work together on content sharing, experience sharing, and expert exchanges which may help our journalists to conduct their duties in a qualified way,” said Molalign Melesse, Deputy CEO and Chief of Staff at the Ethiopian Broadcasting Corporation.
The Ethiopian Broadcasting Corporation is Ethiopia’s state broadcasting organisation and is owned by the government of the country. Its headquarters are located in Addis Ababa. EBC was established as Ethiopian Radio in 1935 and Ethiopian Television (ETV) in 1962. It operates throughout the republic. EBC provides current affairs coverage, educational and awareness programmes, sports broadcasting, and entertainment content. The corporation includes several radio stations (Ethiopian National Radio, FM Addis 97.1, and FM 104.7) and television channels: ETV News, ETV Languages, ETV Entertainment, ETV Sport, and ETV Representative, as well as regional channels serving the eastern, western, northern and southern parts of the country. Most EBC programmes are broadcast in Amharic, one of Ethiopia’s official languages. Some news segments are also aired in Oromo, Somali, Tigrinya, Afar, Harari, and English.
Yulia Nazarkina, Head of the Africa Division at the International Cooperation Department of TV BRICS, noted that closer and more comprehensive cooperation among media organisations from BRICS countries and the Global South contributes to the creation of an objective international news agenda, providing a favourable environment for the development of humanitarian and economic ties between nations. The extensive experience and high level of professionalism of EBC specialists will enrich the BRICS+ agenda with unique television content highlighting Africa’s ethnic and cultural diversity and showcasing the continent’s business potential.
In Ethiopia, TV BRICS also cooperates with the Ethiopian News Agency (ENA), the media holding Fana Broadcasting Corporate (FBC), and the University of Gondar.
In addition to Ethiopia, organisations from Zimbabwe, Kenya, Mozambique, Nigeria, Tunisia, and South Africa have established partnership relations with TV BRICS across the African continent.
