China increases number of electric vehicle charging stations across country
The rapid development of electric vehicle infrastructure is driven by rising sales
By the end of July 2026, the total number of electric vehicle charging points in China had reached 23.68 million, an increase of 41.9 per cent year-on-year. This was reported by Xinhua News Agency, a partner of TV BRICS, citing China’s National Energy Administration.
The number of public charging stations rose to 5.099 million, which is 21.3 per cent higher than last year’s figure. The number of private charging points reached 18.58 million by the end of July, an increase of 48.8 per cent year-on-year.
Data from the national charging infrastructure monitoring and maintenance platform indicates the ongoing expansion of the electric vehicle support network against the backdrop of rapid growth in sales. According to Chinese industry statistics, in July 2026, sales of new energy vehicles exceeded 60 per cent of total new car sales for the month for the first time. In July, production and sales of such vehicles rose to 1.57 million and 1.56 million units, respectively. Year-on-year, these figures increased by 26.8 per cent and 23.7 per cent, respectively, according to the source.
To meet the growing demand for vehicles powered by alternative energy sources, China is accelerating the development of its charging network. In October 2025, the country’s authorities unveiled a three-year action plan to improve the infrastructure for charging electric vehicles. By the end of 2027, the plan is to establish a nationwide network of 28 million charging points, while the total capacity of public charging stations is set to exceed 300 million kilowatts.
China intends to increase the share of new-energy vehicles in the country’s total vehicle fleet to 30 per cent by 2030, according to the action plan to reduce carbon emissions during the 15th Five-Year Plan period (2026–2030).
